"Was in San Diego to attend an old friend’s retirement from the Navy and stumbled into this museum/ nautical emporium. As a student of naval history, I found the place fascinating. The building was purpose-built to house their collection. While some of the most historic items are destined for public collections, many are available for purchase: antique chronometers, barometers, ships bells, navigation lights, folk art, marine paintings, medical instruments, china, scrimshaw, etc. I spent an hour looking over the collections and ended up purchasing a WW2-era USCG barometer. There is a $1 entry fee—absolutely worth the price, and refunded if you purchase something. If you are looking for a retirement gift for a Sailor, come here."

"I find and refurbish antiques from auctions and estate sales in Canada. I had found a beautiful brass reflecting telescope on-line.
I happened to notice a website nautical shop in San Diego - West Sea. Some guy named Rod emailed me back. He told me I had found something special and he’d be happy to tell me about it. I was desperate to get any information, but also wary of anyone claiming to be an expert. I decided to check out this West Sea Company and see what they were about. The reviews were fairly glowing. A few people were complaining about having to pay an entry fee into their museum (which I found a little silly), but otherwise loyal, happy customers. I decided the paltry sum of $40 was more than fair to have accurate information from someone who seemed to know his stuff. Did he ever.
Not only was Rod thorough in his research, but he never once made me feel like a customer. He offered literature, even street addresses in London for the makers! And at no point during our lengthy interactions did he hesitate to offer any and all the help he could. It was almost as if he shared the fondness that I did for this beautiful piece of history. He gave me all the tools and contacts I’d need to refurbish it back to fully-functioning condition and left an open-ended offer for support at any time. Great service. I was satisfied. More than that, I was duly impressed!
My experience with Rod and West Sea has been unreal. If the above paragraphs haven’t been glowing enough, I urge you to just ask him a question. Write him an email and ask him to show you the fervour with which he loves his work. You’ll be amazed. "
